Social housing in Bristol

The supply of social housing in Bristol is limited. Around 2300 properties become available each year and over 13,000 people are registered on the Housing Register.

With so many more applicants than vacancies, those on lower bands are unlikely to get an offer of accommodation.

New HomeChoice Bristol Policy from the 5th May 2015

Letting decisions for propertised advertised between 28/04/2015 and 3rd May 2015 will be based on the new policy.

From the 5th May 2015 we are changing the HomeChoice Bristol Housing Allocation Scheme. The new policy makes some changes to how applications are prioritised and introduces a qualification critieria which applicants must meet to be allowed onto HomeChoice Bristol. Some of the qualification reasons are listed below:

  • Residency - You will need to have lived in Bristol continuously for the last 2 years
  • Income - No applications from people with income over £40,000
  • Savings -No applications from people with savings over £40,000
  • Home Owners - No applications from those who own their own homes
  • Behaviour - No applications from those who are guilty of serious breaches of a current or previous tenancy

There are exceptions to the qualification criteria which are listed in the new Allocation Scheme below.

The new policy removes relegation and replaces it with being suspended from bidding. Some people may be suspended from bidding for the following reasons:

  • Applicants owing £500 or more to Bristol City Council or one of partner Housing Associations
  • Applicants guilty of anti-social behaviour where a notice has been served
  • Applicants who refuse two suitable offers
